New Challenges, South Africa

I have been appointed in a newly created post of IT Coordinator at our school. We are a large independant college in South Africa and have 1600 learners from grade 000 to grade 12. Our staff are very enthusiastic about integrating technology (although very little of this has actually taken place) into the classroom and I would like to learn from those out there that have been doing this for for a while as I am very new to the challenge.

I would like our pupils and staff to have the opportunity to collaborate with pupils in other countries.

I would REALLY appreciate any assistance or ideas... even a sounding board will help as I am a bit awed by the prospect of dragging an entire school into a global community and the 21st century.

Thanks

Adele

Hi Adele,

I am a Tech Coord in an elementary school. I have had this position for 6 years and was a computer teacher for 17 years.

Well, as a Computer Teacher, it was the best time in my teaching career. At that time you can be certain that a student learned computers because I was the person teaching it. But as a Tech Coord the onus is on the teacher. The Tech Coord is the person who teaches the teacher. That can be a chore at times and other times it is rewarding.

This is what you can do, think of a internet-based project and assign it to one teacher. Make a big deal about it. Post in all over the school and see who else comes running to be apart of it. At faculty meetings, give certificates to teachers who have used the computer with theirs students. If you see a teacher using a computer, give her/him a certificate. You would not believe how many teachers who will come up to you and ask why they did not get one. Try that!

Email me at swatson@nps.epals.com.

Also, I have a forum under ongoing projects: Host a Mascot-The Wildcats. We would love to have you join this project. Let me know, you have until March 24, 2006.

Hi

We are a small school on the Lancashire coast in the UK. There are 14 juniors - 4 in Year 6 - who are all keen to correspond with you. They love learning about other cultures.

Hi,

I am from Cote d'Ivoire in Africa and I teach English to students in secondary school. Our country is a French speaking one. I would be very glad to undertake this program with you and your students. That could give us the opportunity to exchange to. My students are from 11 to 19. lemagnon@epals.com

RE: New Challenges, South Africa

Adele,

I am a middle school teacher in the state of Washington, USA and have been integrating technology and learning for a number of years.  We constantly look for classes around the world with whom we can connect our students and would be pleased to connect with your students.

So as to avoid "talking" about things that don't interest you, I invite you to e-mail me directly on e-PALS (rknopp@epals.com) to ask specific questions to give direction as to how we can help.

  Best wishes.

RE: New Challenges, South Africa

Hello Adele,

Sounds challenging indeed. It looks you're the one to start breaking walls so...

OK, let me introduce to you the way I succeed to "drag" several schools from Europe, Asia and US and make the students work together.

Please have a look at http://ejournal.eduprojects.net/ESP-ACE6/

Take your time to see everything but remember to start with the ... project presentation. Check your PC sound settings too, because all included webpresentations have ... midi backgrounds.

Fingers crossed,

Waiting for your comments,

prof. Calin R.
