Hello everybody. I wish you are all ok and that you are enjoying teaching. I'm an ESL/EFL teacher and I have four classes. Two of them are total beginners and the two others are intermediate. My biggest challenge is how to get them write well. I did but in vain many motivating efforts like getting them engaged in penpal correspondence and intensive writing assignments. From your classroom experiences, can you suggest efficient ways of improving students writing? Thank you in advance.

Hello,

I've also done all those things you mentioned: penpals, writing assignments, etc. Everything takes its time, so wait and you will some results.

As far as writing assignments I realised that they didn't pay any attention to my corrections, so they kept on doing the same mistakes. Now they are getting better, because I only underline the mistakes and make some notes, such as SP=spelling, STR=Structure, VT=verb tense, etc. They have to correct them, so they are evaluated twice, one when they first write and the other when they correct their mistakes. It has been successful, you can try that.

Best regards,

Helena

Hello Helena,

Thank you very much for the time allotted. We most of the time practise formative assessment in our classes that is we keep a positive interaction with the students. Students may be aware of that or may not but it doesn't matter since our ultimate goal is to promote students' independence. We also try to change the classroom culture by varying our methods would create good learning atmoshphere.

Thank you very much Helena. I'm a Moroccan EFL teacher and would like to share experiences and discussions.

Regards
